How Did I End Up Here?

How Did I End Up Here?

Have you ever sat for a minute or two and wondered how you ended up here?

Here can be many things:

Your job, family, the town you live in, state of mind………..

How about doing the same for other humans?

It’s something Allison raised as we have been driving around Tasmania and meeting some interesting humans with fascinating stories of how they’ve ended up where they are.

Here’s a few examples:

Moto GP loving Cheryl who was raised in Coffs Harbour, moved to Far North Queensland and now resides in White each Tasmania, operating an AirBnB as well as a wombat rescue service (and any other native animal that needs help).

Former tour guide Gary who started life in the UK, got the travel bug and spent years as a tour guide in Africa before moving to Sydney working as a travel agent and now owner of an AirBnb in Dover in southern Tasmania.

Local Triabunna lad on the east coast of Tasmania Michael who studied and lectured on marine biology and 15 years ago felt the urge to go home and start a tour company that specialises in taking tourists on a circumnavigation of the breathtaking coastline of Maria Island.

We asked the question and the answers ranged from “finding my passion” to “I’m not really sure”.

It got me thinking about can one spend some time reflecting on “How Did I End Up Here?”

The boy from north west Victoria who loved sport and studied and qualified as a primary school teacher, then went on to be a cadet in a logistics company working shift work, in the call centre, sales and then management gigs. A boy who got bored easily and tended to jump from company to company sometimes as an employee and others as a contractor. Operations, Customer Service, Sales, Humans Resources and General Management roles along the way. A boy who eight years ago started his own business with a strong desire to provoke and humanise workplaces………….bloody hell………..that’s a lot of twists and turns

I spent some time last week thinking about the question and looked at it across five distinct areas:

The Idle Minutes/Hours/Days/Months/Years we Fake
The Risks and Opportunities We Take
The Rules We Break
The Plans We Bake
The Choices We Make

What did I fake?  – when was I not being me to get ahead?
What risks/opportunities did I take? – how did I choose risk and opportunity (or both)?
What rules did I break? – when did I go against the norm?
What plans did I bake? – what ingredients did I slow cook, not microwave for 1 minute?
What choices did I take? – when did those sliding doors moments occur?

So That’s It………

Fake – Take – Break – Bake – Make

How did you end up here (whatever here is to you)?
