The ANZ Enterprise Service Management (ESM) Leadership team were working in silos, surviving and at times showing clear signs of dysfunctional behaviours. There was no alignment to or demonstration of a set of behavioural norms (values) and this was impacting on the 400 strong team both in Australia and India. The behaviours at Leadership Team (LT) level were being mirrored at the levels below and while many recognised this wasn’t sustainable, there was denial from some being demonstrated as passive aggressive behaviour.
After doing some initial work on 'Leading SELF', Mark worked with the LT to create a new set of behavioural norms (values) statements (see Appendix 1.2 for detail) that have been communicated and cascaded into the 400 strong team – these are now observed in behaviours across the group.
As recent as late November Mark had conversations with broader groups within the ESM team about the impact of the values. The overwhelming response is that these are 'alive' in the language and behaviours shown across the ESM Group from top to bottom. They're no longer 'words on a wall'. Other 'Heads Of' at ANZ are now exploring doing the same work with their teams given the feedback on change.
